A brief history of the Minneapolis & St. Louis mainline from Mason City to Peoria and Albia:

12/03/21

Located south of Oskaloosa, this unique through truss bridge is one of several crossings of Muchakinock Creek.
Built in 1904 to replace a previous, lighter bridge; this bridge a single unique through truss span. Like many truss bridges along this route, this structure contains a unique design, which is best described as a hybrid Pratt Through Truss.
11 examples of this bridge design were constructed, mainly between Albert Lea, Minnesota and Peoria. In addition, one deck truss variation of this bridge was constructed on the north side of Oskaloosa. Some of the examples of this design are larger, such as crossings of the Iowa and Skunk Rivers.
The main truss has 4 panels with riveted connections. The bridge also features unique subpanels in two panels. The substructures for this bridge are built of concrete.

Unfortunately, no plaque can be found on the bridge. More research is being done on the bridge, although it is believed that Phoenix Iron Works may have worked on this bridge.
Overall, the bridge appears to be in fair to good condition, with little serious deterioration. Some spalling has begun to occur on the abutments.

The author has ranked this bridge as being regionally significant, due to the unique truss design and large size.
